From new OLED TVs to a virtual reality headset, it’s safe to say Sony has a lot of goodies to showcase this week in Las Vegas at CES 2022.

While the original concept had four seats, the SUV is a lot more practical by accommodating up to seven people. It essentially looks like a high-riding version of the sedan and has the following dimensions: 192.7 inches (4.9 meters) long, 76 inches (1.93 meters) wide, and 65 inches (1.65 meters) tall, with a generous wheelbase stretching at 119.3 inches (3.03 meters). It rides on 20-inch wheels and tips the scales at 5,467 pounds (2,480 kilograms).

The Japanese technology giant showed the Vision-S electric saloon in 2020 as a showcase of its autonomous driving and in-car entertainment systems, but, despite starting tests with a road-legal prototype a year later

An SUV with 5G controlling System

VISION-S is equipped with the 5G network function. As a result, occupants can fully enjoy the cloud-based entertainment services that require low latency and high bandwidth, such as streaming movies, music, and games.

In order to maximize the performance of the 5G even in vehicles driven at high speed, we seek real-time performance by applying the technology that Sony cultivated during the development of smartphones to mobility.

Thanks to this technology, we will have new experiences of mobility, highly automated driving, and the remote-control system.

Sony Vision-S SUV Interior

However, Sony’s strength, and arguably the main reason it entered the automotive space, lies in the interior of the Vision-S.

Like most contemporary cars, the interior of the electric vehicle is dominated by flat screens, audio technology, and the user interface – areas where the vast Sony empire already possesses vast expertise.

The panoramic infotainment interface and individual rear displays can also be used for video playback or for playing video games via a remote connection to a Sony Playstation gaming console.

Sony won’t be the first technology company to take the plunge into the automotive market. Apple has been developing its own EV since at least 2014, Google supplies infotainment software to a raft of manufacturers (including Ford and Volvo) and LG and Panasonic are among the most prolific EV battery suppliers on the market.
